NYGO Final Update
The New York Geocaching Organization (NYGO) was founded in 2003 with a mission to serve as a non-profit educational organization in order to foster and promote geocaching throughout New York State. As with any volunteer-driven organization, there have been trials and tribulations - but the true spirit of our purpose always remained constant. Over the last six years NYGO has continually sought to educate new members on the principles of geocaching, teach and encourage responsible stewardship of our precious public lands and present geocaching as a family-oriented activity. In 2003 geocaching was still in its formative years and the geocachers that did exist often times commuted miles away to locate the nearest hide. During that period, NYGO was created to give all New Yorkers an opportunity to connect and befriend one another as a result of our mutual interest. As a result of this endeavor, NYGO has accomplished a great deal while realizing many successes on behalf of the geo-community. Today with well over 750,000 geocachers worldwide and the ever-increasing popularity of our activity expanding by leaps and bounds, geocaching continues to evolve as does the needs of its players. The growth of geocaching has caused the creation of numerous community sites to bring local cachers together to address the regional needs of their community. With this regionalization, there is no longer a need for a broader organization to cover the entire state. With that, the NYGO Board of Directors has made the hard decision to disband the organization effective immediately. As of April 24, 2009, the NYGO website was locked down in its entirety. The decision to disband NYGO was a difficult but necessary one to make and on behalf of the Board of Directors, we express our sincerest gratitude to all of the volunteers who have supported NYGO's events and functions, and who continue to make New York State a great place to geocache. Thank you. |
